How Grip helped Wildgrain get a handle on their packaging

In the past, there was a fine line between using ‘too much’ and ‘too little’ refrigerant in our shipments. Grip got us using ‘the correct amount’ as soon as we integrated. That’s only the beginning of the improvements, and the praise that I have for their team’s service and dedication likely won’t fit the storage of any computer, let alone the character limit of this post.”

The customer

Founded by husband and wife duo Ismail Salhi & Johanna Hartzheim, Wildgrain is the first ever bake-from-frozen subscription box on the market which delivers high-quality sourdough breads, pastries and fresh pasta right to your door.

Named USA Today’s #1 food subscription box of 2023, Wildgrain’s small Boston-based team approached Grip to help them get a handle on their frozen shipping.

The problem

Many perishable eCommerce brands operate in the dark when it comes to shipping; sending their products using the same methods all year round despite changes to carrier performance, on-ground temperature and large weather events like wildfires or blizzards. At Grip, we call this “static shipping.”

For example, most brands send a shipment from their California fulfillment center to a customer in Arizona the same way all year around. This means wasting money on extra refrigerant when it’s not needed or risking spoilage by not using enough refrigerant when the temperatures are high.

The solution

At Grip, we built a smart logistics engine to give perishable DTC brands like Wildgrain real time visibility and better control over their operations.

Our powerful dashboard leverages over 25 million data points and analyzes factors such as temperature, major weather events, and carrier performance to provide package-by-package shipping recommendations. This level of insight was not previously available for most DTC brands shipping perishable goods.

Grip’s platform saves our partners up to 30% in shipping costs by recommending the correct packaging and shipping based on real-time conditions. Businesses also reduce spoilage rates by up to 25% after onboarding onto Grip.

“In the past, there was a fine line between using ‘too much’ and ‘too little’ refrigerant in our shipments,” says Brendan Duttry, Wildgrain’s Vice President of Operations.

“Grip Shipping got us using ‘the correct amount’ as soon as we integrated. That’s only the beginning of the improvements, and the praise that I have for their team’s service and dedication likely won’t fit the storage of any computer, let alone the character limit of this post.”

The amount of dry ice and number of gel packs in each Wildgrain box is personalized and calculated based on each customer zip code’s distance from the closest fulfillment center.

This not only ensures higher quality deliveries and predictable shipping for enhanced customer satisfaction and lifetime value, but takes the stress and guesswork out of logistics for fast-growing eCommerce businesses.
